B2B paid media strategy, channel by channel

Six auctions, one budget, and a buying group that 6sense's 2025 survey put at 10+ people. The trick isn't picking the best channel. It's giving each one a job it can actually do.

warp zone: the short version

> A B2B paid media strategy assigns each channel a funnel job. Google and Microsoft search capture active demand. LinkedIn reaches exact accounts and roles. Meta and Reddit add cheaper reach and retargeting. ChatGPT ads are a test for research moments. Fund capture first, then retargeting, then demand creation, judged on pipeline.

Most B2B paid media plans are built backward. Someone picks channels, splits the budget by gut feel, then asks each channel to deliver the same thing: demos. Search delivers some. LinkedIn delivers expensive ones. Meta delivers a pile of form fills sales won't touch. Then everyone argues about attribution.

A better starting point is the job. Each channel sees buyers at a different moment, with a different signal, at a different price. Match the job to the channel and the budget split mostly writes itself.

What is Google Ads best at for B2B?

Search is the closest thing B2B has to a sure bet: someone types the problem, you answer it. It's also limited by how many people already know they have the problem. That's why it comes first and why it can't be the whole plan. The full playbook lives in our B2B PPC guide.

Google's other B2B tool is Demand Gen. Per Google Ads Help, Demand Gen campaigns run across YouTube (including Shorts), Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Google Display Network, and support lookalike segments built from your customers, site visitors or YouTube viewers. For B2B, its best use is usually retargeting and lookalikes seeded from a clean customer list, not cold broad reach.

Why do B2B advertisers add Microsoft Advertising?

Two reasons. First, it's the easiest expansion in paid media: Microsoft Advertising can import campaigns directly from Google Ads, so a working search program can be mirrored in an afternoon. Second, Microsoft offers LinkedIn profile targeting, letting you target by company, industry or job function.

That combination is unusual. You get search intent layered with professional data. The volume is smaller than Google, but for B2B the audience filter often matters more than the reach. Our Bing Ads vs. Google Ads comparison goes deeper on the trade-offs.

When is LinkedIn the right B2B channel?

When the buyer is best described by where they work and what they do. No other platform lets you say "finance leaders at 500 named companies" with the same precision.

A few platform rules shape how you use it. LinkedIn's API docs say an uploaded company list needs at least 300 matched members to serve, and LinkedIn recommends lists of at least 1,000 companies for best results. LinkedIn's Lead Gen Forms come pre-filled with profile data, which cuts friction on mobile.

The catch is cost per click, which tends to run well above Meta or Reddit. That's the price of precision. LinkedIn earns it back when the audience is narrow and the offer fits the stage. It loses when it's used as a cheap lead machine. Audience building, creative and retargeting across LinkedIn, Meta and Reddit get their own breakdown in our B2B paid social strategy.

LinkedIn isn't expensive. Reaching the wrong people on LinkedIn is expensive. The click price is the same either way.

Does Meta work for B2B?

Better than its reputation, in narrower roles. Your buyers scroll Instagram and Facebook like everyone else, and in most B2B accounts impressions there cost far less than on LinkedIn. The weakness is targeting: you can't select by employer or job title the way LinkedIn allows, so cold prospecting on Meta tends to bring volume with uneven quality.

Where Meta shines for B2B: retargeting site visitors, reaching uploaded customer and prospect lists, and adding cheap frequency to accounts already in play. If you run Meta lead ads, close the loop. Meta's Conversions API for CRM integration lets you send downstream lead stages back so delivery can optimize toward better leads. Meta lists requirements of at least 200 leads a month and data uploads at least once a day.

Where does Reddit fit in B2B paid media?

Reddit is where practitioners talk shop. Engineers, IT admins, marketers and operators ask peers for recommendations in public threads, which makes it useful for categories where the end user influences the purchase.

Targeting runs on communities, interests and keywords. In October 2024 Reddit extended keyword targeting to place ads in relevant feeds and conversations, with machine learning optimizing across both placements, as reported by Search Engine Land. Reddit's audience is skeptical of anything that reads like a sales pitch, so creative and offers need to sound like a useful peer, not a brochure.

Should ChatGPT ads be part of a B2B plan?

As a test, yes. Per OpenAI's Help Center, ads show below ChatGPT responses to logged-in adults, not to Plus, Pro or Business subscribers, and are matched with advertiser context hints instead of keywords. Advertisers pick a Views, Clicks or Conversions objective, but the bill is always per impression or per click, never per conversion. OpenAI recommends a $3 to $5 starting max CPC.

The appeal for B2B is timing: ChatGPT catches the "help me figure out what I need" stage that used to spread across many searches. The limit is that paying decision makers on premium plans don't see ads. Our ChatGPT ads guide covers setup and the open questions.

How should you sequence paid channels by company stage?

Add channels in the order you can measure them. A channel you can't connect to pipeline is a channel you'll cut the first time someone asks what it did.

StageCore channelsAdd when readyWhat must be true first
Early (finding fit)Google search on high-intent terms, brand campaignMicrosoft importConversions tracked to qualified lead
Growing (repeatable sales)Search plus LinkedIn to named accounts and rolesMeta and Google retargetingCRM stages flowing back to platforms
Scaling (multiple segments)Search, LinkedIn, retargeting across platformsReddit, Demand Gen prospecting, ChatGPT ads testsA way to measure lift, not just last click

Channel picking isn't a one-time draft. Strong programs run a roster, give each channel a role, and swap based on telemetry rather than habit. The channel you started with doesn't get tenure.

How should you split a B2B paid media budget?

Ignore any article that hands you a universal percentage split. Your category's search volume, deal size and cycle length decide the right mix. Use a sequence instead:

  1. Fund demand capture to its ceiling. Spend on high-intent search until extra budget stops producing qualified pipeline at a cost you accept. Rising cost per qualified lead on marginal keywords is the signal you've hit it.
  2. Fund retargeting to fit your audiences. Retargeting budget is capped by how many people you can retarget. Size it to the audience and a sensible frequency, not to a share of the total.
  3. Fund demand creation with what's left. LinkedIn, Meta, Reddit and Demand Gen prospecting. Protect this spend for at least one full sales cycle before judging it on revenue.
  4. Hold a fixed test slice. A small, pre-agreed amount for new channels, with kill criteria written down before launch.

Here's how that plays out for a hypothetical team with $30,000 a month. Search saturates at $14,000: past that, the extra clicks come from loosely related terms and cost per qualified lead climbs. Retargeting audiences across LinkedIn and Meta can absorb about $4,000 at reasonable frequency. That leaves $10,000 for LinkedIn prospecting to a defined account list and $2,000 for a ChatGPT ads test. The numbers are made up. The logic is the point.

A percentage split from someone else's plan is a guess wearing a lab coat. Your own saturation points are the only benchmark that counts.

// 06 · go / no-go

Which channel should you add next?

Answer three questions. Is search capturing all the efficient demand it can? If not, fix that first. Can you track the new channel to qualified pipeline? If not, set that up first. Can you fund it for a full sales cycle? If not, wait.

Three yeses means go. Pick the channel whose targeting signal best describes your buyer: job and employer points to LinkedIn, known lists point to Meta and Demand Gen retargeting, public peer conversation points to Reddit, and research-heavy purchases point to a ChatGPT ads test.

FAQ

What is B2B paid media?

B2B paid media is paid advertising aimed at business buyers across search, social and emerging surfaces such as Google Ads, Microsoft Advertising, LinkedIn, Meta, Reddit and ChatGPT ads. Each channel plays a different role in a long, multi-person buying process.

Which paid channel should a B2B startup start with?

Usually Google search on high-intent keywords, because it captures buyers who are already looking. Microsoft Advertising is the common second step since Google campaigns can be imported and it offers LinkedIn profile targeting.

Is LinkedIn worth it for B2B advertising?

Often, when you need to reach specific companies, job functions or seniority levels that search cannot isolate. Clicks tend to cost more than on Meta or Reddit, so it works best with precise audiences and offers matched to buying stage.

How should B2B companies split their paid media budget?

Fund demand capture until extra spend stops producing qualified pipeline at an acceptable cost, then fund retargeting sized to your audiences, then demand creation, and hold a fixed slice for tests with clear kill criteria. Use your own CRM data, not borrowed percentages.

Should B2B advertisers test ChatGPT ads?

It can be worth a small test once search and tracking are solid. ChatGPT ads show to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, are matched with context hints rather than keywords, and bill per impression or per click. OpenAI recommends a $3 to $5 starting max CPC.
